Horses are often some as symbols of power or grace. From references in history to literature, TV and film, famous horses hold a special place in countless cultures. From valiant warhorses, battling racehorses, or beloved fictional characters, these beautiful animals have forged an iconic place for themselves in our lives. And who are some of these famous horses I hear you ask?

There’s Bucephalus, the loyal steed of Alexander the Great, remembered for his strength and intelligence. Another warhorse is Marengo, the horse of Napoleon Bonaparte. Legend has it he survived many battles, including the Battle of Waterloo.

In literature and television, a famous horse that instantly comes to mind is Black Beauty, from Anna Sewell’s 1877 novel of the same name. Told from the horse’s perspective, the book centres in on the timeless and indelible bond between humans and horses. In  J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, as Gandalf’s steed, Shadowfax is described as the fastest horse in Middle-earth. The sad sequence of Artax in The NeverEnding Story too, is hard to forget for anyone with a heart.

Mister Ed, the talking horse from the US 1960’s sitcom mixed the comedic with the surreal. Animated and cartoon horses too draw in all ages. Bullseye from Toy Story, Maximus from Tangled, the list goes on.

Horse racing of course has a vital role in making household names of many now famous horses. In the United States, Secretariat is one of the greatest racehorses of all time, winning the 1973 Triple Crown. There’s Seabiscuit too, who became a symbol of hope during the Great Depression. In the UK, Red Rum is fondly remembered as three-time Grand National winner, a feat still unmatched decades on. Frankel, another legend of British racing, retired undefeated. Battlers both.

Throughout history, horses have served as warriors of war, workers, and companions. Whether galloping across a battlefield, winning an iconic race, or starring in a beloved childrens story, horses continue to inspire. Let all of us celebrate famous horses. This site is dedicated to them.
